About Me

Hi! I am a professor of communication with a specialization in rhetorical studies at Oakland University. My current research explores women's political rhetoric and the rhetoric of motherhood. These foci have led me to study a diverse array of influential figures, such as pro-democracy dissident Aung San Suu Kyi, second wave U.S. feminist Andrea Dworkin, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, artists Shirin Neshat and Staceyann Chin, and First Ladies Sarah Polk and Edith Wilson. My work has appeared in a range of scholarly journals including Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, International Journal of Communication, Communication, Culture & Critique, The Communication Review, Text and Performance Quarterly, and Women's Studies in Communication. My contributions also appear in edited collections such as The Routledge Handbook of Rhetoric and Power (ed. Nathan Crick), Mothering Outside the Lines: Tales of Boundary Busting Mamas (eds. Michelann Parr and Betty Ann Martin), and Southern First Ladies: Culture and Place in White House History (ed. Katherine A.S. Sibley).

In addition to my research and teaching roles, I serve as the internship advisor for my department, where I shepherd students as they transition from school to work. I am humbled to have received the Honors College Inspiration Award and the Elizabeth Youngjohn Teaching Award for my contributions to teaching, and the Phyllis Law Googasian Award for my contributions to the advancement of women in higher education.
